Modern times

Not much personal stuff to ramble on these days, mostly being chased by the clock and the calendar.
“Kuća poso, poso kuća”, as that terrible song goes, though at least “kuća” part is fun.

I screened Charlie Chaplin’s Modern times in class today (watch at least 2:30-17:50). Although we kept the debate to modernity and the age of the machine, I kept thinking about this quote from Richard Florida’s Cities and the Creative Class:

I often make an analogy to Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times: The creative-class worker racing frantically to keep up with e-mails, telephone calls, and other aspects of information overload resembles Chaplin’s assembly-line worker frantically trying to keep up with the assembly line — but the creative-class worker has to do this on a 24/7, around-the-clock-basis. A great deal of research needs to be done on the incidence of mental injury and its relationship to new ways of working.
