Seeking security through consumer choices is itself a prolific and inexhaustible source of insecurity

September 30, 2012

I have no way to say whether the blouses hawked and huckstered this summer are smart and flattering or downright ridiculous, uglier than the blouses in the next shop. But . . . this is not really my business – I am not to be blamed for wearing one; there is a designer/brand label on my neck or the designer/brand logo on my chest for everyone to see and shut up . . . Designers breathe supreme and absolute authority. There is no point in contesting that authority, but a lot of sense in hiding behind it.  From Zygmunt Bauman: The Individualized Society.
