Some minds mount no higher than this

April 20, 2012

“The essential of beauty is shape; and as our minds are developed and purified we learn to appreciate the beauty of form, and colour becomes mere accessory.” (Howard Payson Arnold, European mosaic, 1864: 266-267)

At this moment, I should be polishing a translation of an article I thought (OK, hoped) would be done on Thursday. I’m obviously not there yet. The piece (not mine) is on history of public opinion and is full of bits and pieces of citations and references from 18 and 19 century texts, so it seemed appropriate to share with you this entirely unrelated quote I had just stumbled across.
