Uses of newspapers

September 22, 2008

My PhD advisor is really a wise man but what I value the most about him is not his accumulated knowledge but his ability to look at things from a different perspective, his innovative insights and posing the right kind of questions. This post sort of joins his way of thinking and my way of looking (for obscure details).

In his media classes he would point out that there are numerous nonstandard uses of media that extend far beyond immediate goals of media corporations. For example newspapers are routinely used to wrap-up things, to protect from dirt or cold, to start a fire, as coasters, book spines etc. He actually made his first money as a kid by selling newspapers. Not by distributing daily news in his village in Northern Germany but by selling old newspapers to the local butcher for wrapping the meat. And now for something completely different :)

Each time you get your drink or sweet decorated with one of those colorful paper umbrellas, you are served a dose of old news. In Chinese. Tamara now gets one of these almost each Saturday if we are lucky enough to be served by our favorite waitress and than re-designs it during the day (top photo). In the evening, two cuts with exacto knife and I get to look at the old news :)

When I was a child I used to enjoy unrolling fireworks made of newspaper in China just so I could see the exotic script.
