Today was grey and cold, so here is a bit of brown for somebody I miss tonight.

Street art? Or just graffiti

I don’t know what is your take on the subject of graffiti. I am currently quite fond of them, particularly if they are not just some obscene sketches and mindless rants. It seems to me that Ljubljana is currently under graffiti attack (or is it just me noticing them more?) and a lot of them are really well done.
I have been photographing them for some time now and a recent post by Razzbuffnik spurred me into posting them. I mostly focus mostly on those that depict people as in a way, for me they represent a certain (though admittedly obscure) portrait of city’s inhabitants, a sort of a giant public photo album.

Just a quick “visual bite” from today’s relaxed coffee at Slovene ethnographic museum cafe. The espresso was a real shot in the vein but the ambient/music/things Tamara made up for the poisonously strong, heavily roasted drink.
And it was way more appealing to indulge in there than to get straight into the rush hour traffic. I guess some (smart) things do come with age. Or attitude.
BTW, umbrella is one of the few words in vocabulary of my intuitive German, and this looked like a perfect opportunity to use it :)

Alan Ford on Eipprova, axe included

There is a peculiar courtyard building on Eipprova street in downtown Ljubljana. If you have the chance, it’s worth peaking because it will transport you to another time. Or place. Or medium. I always feel as if I had entered a scene from my favorite comic book Alan Ford. The place looks almost exactly like this, even the caption suits the real building. Be as it may, the peculiar place became an object of fascination and a photo project by a young Austrian photographer Anita Strasser who documented the building and its residents. The photographs of this “urban ethnology” project are currently exhibited on the spot and in Slovene ethnographic museum. I plan on using one or two vistas from the place for my own “urban ethnology” project that is about rural nature of Slovene capital, of its rustic residue. Like in the pic below.

A tribute to Eugene Smith

My quarantine days are slowly coming to an end, at least I hope so. Although I have not been idle, the days of isolation have left me with little exciting things to share. Today I went over some older files and dug out this little tribute to W. Eugene Smith. Some of you might be familiar with his monumental and inspiring Pittsburgh project, part of which included photographs of the unusual street names of the city. The Gold-Water corner is in a run down part of Dumbo, NYC.
Come to think of it, Smith would have done it in black and white. I think I actually prefer it in black and white. How about you folks?

It was about time my friends, for a little drowning by numbers. To tell you the truth, I would have taken the shot without numbers as well, I like the parallel colour planes and grids.

Last week

It’s the last week of the semester and it feels sooo good!! Well, it will actually really feel good after I grade some 200 papers that they will all turn by the week is over, but still… We also had quite an exciting weekend but I choose not to go into details of our car breaking down on the highway and a wedding from which starved people escaped to McDonald’s to get a little snack. What you get instead is the above pic from Koper, and a slightly more abstract version of the same motif - mind you it is quite a challenge taking photos while holding Tamara in one hand (click here to see the proof and here to see the little perpetrator).

Just a little something I spotted recently, hope it makes your Friday.
The caption reads “Watermelons - art or crime”. From Postojna.
