It was about time my friends, for a little drowning by numbers. To tell you the truth, I would have taken the shot without numbers as well, I like the parallel colour planes and grids.

Last week

It’s the last week of the semester and it feels sooo good!! Well, it will actually really feel good after I grade some 200 papers that they will all turn by the week is over, but still… We also had quite an exciting weekend but I choose not to go into details of our car breaking down on the highway and a wedding from which starved people escaped to McDonald’s to get a little snack. What you get instead is the above pic from Koper, and a slightly more abstract version of the same motif - mind you it is quite a challenge taking photos while holding Tamara in one hand (click here to see the proof and here to see the little perpetrator).

Just a little something I spotted recently, hope it makes your Friday.
The caption reads “Watermelons – art or crime”. From Postojna.

Stones and spring

Our favorite pastime activity of this spring (or at least the one we spent most time for) was looking for real estate. We really need a bigger apartment, otherwise we will end up under an avalanche of my papers and books or being swallowed by some giant stuffed animal that people buy for Tamara. Must admit that our enthusiasm is very unstable, particularly with the prices around here, so we are swinging back and forth between buying some buildable land to build a house from scratch, or an older house to expand and renovate, or simply to move to a larger apartment. Or abort the plan and buy a piece of property in a warmer part of Slovenia or even in Croatian coastal area and wait for the real estate bubble to burst. This latter option gave some incredible results both in content and price, like this 80.000 Euro one with a peculiar sense of humor::
An old stone house with large courtyard for renovation with all relevant permits for current size issued.
/…/ House needs complete renovation and there is plenty of stones all around the terrain.
Oh well, speaking about Croatia, I read last week that they found a body of a woman in an attic apartment in Zagreb that was laying there for forty(!) years. Talk about a nice apartment building and good neighbours, huh? And apparently, that was not the only mummified body laying for years in an empty apartment in that neighborhood, although it was definitely the oldest.

Save Polaroid

You might have heard that earlier this year Polaroid decided to discontinue the production of their unique cameras, and even more importantly, film. This could be one of those “capitalist pigs seeking ultimate profit” stories if it were not for one small detail. Polaroid is the sole manufacturer of the Polaroid film in the world and their corporate decision could mean the death of a whole photographic medium. For more information and possibilities of action go to http://www.savepolaroid.com/.

Although I had not used the medium myself, it was on the ever growing list of things I’ll do after PhD. Although I have long been attracted to the Polaroid snapshot aesthetics with its bright colours and potential Holga-like unsharpnes, the reason I really wanted to get into the Polaroid was the Polaroid image transfer technique, where you peel off the image and mount it on art paper with texture or sth. similar to create unique prints. Click here for a brief description of the technique. If you go to Flickr you can find some nice results like this one.

The above illustration is my small contribution to the noble cause, if you by any chance like it, you can download the large resolution image here to print out slightly non-standard size postcards ;)
Or go to Savepolaroid and download their nicely designed action pack.

Snoopy goes to Kamnik

kamnik-snoopy
A few weeks ago we got this wonderful surprise from our dear friends from the States – Snoopy goes to Kamnik. Now this is an illustration I did not expect to see in my life, our nowhere town appearing in Peanuts comics (click here if you want to read the whole comic).
BTW, Snoopy used to be my favorite childhood character, I had a stuffed figure of the beagle that I used to carry around wherever I went, much like Linus does with his blanket. And I used to browse through my sister’s Snoopy comic books, looking at pictures before I could read. Actually, I did this with another comic book, my all time favorite Alan Ford.

Had one of those reinvigorating cool and easy going coffee-themed days at the office. It all started with a sunny morning thank-you-for-stopping-at-the pharmacy-coffee with CC, only to continue with a postcard-pretty coffee invitation by my poet friend and end with my delivery of small coffee “cups” (fildzan) that we bought in Bosnia for my mentor and his wife. Oh yes, we spent a few days in Bosnia last week but I did not ponder on the issue as they were not nearly as invigorating as today. Hence I share only one pic – click here to see holgos go rural.

With two pending coffee invitations, I couldn’t agree more with the Mostar-inspired message from my friend, scribbled on the back of the postcard: ‘kahva razgovoruša’ je pravi most do ljudi (poorly translated it would mean: chatting coffee is a true bridge to people).

tamara love heart
I know, I know, it is not Valentine season but who would not be in love with such a cute creature, who is so much loving you back. Sometimes quite literally :)
