All the stupid things your mom buys to you

For a moment, I felt like Mark Darcey from the film version of Bridget Jones. Only, it wasn’t a raindeer jumper, it was the “thing” you see above. If you can’t tell it straight away, it is a milk pitcher that my mother brought for me from Greece. Just to demonstrate how little some parents know their offspring, I enclose a photo of our other coffee and tea drinking accessories. As you can see, it blends in perfectly. Once I’m done with my PhD, I will make a photoproject on the subject and that is precisely why I kept this trophy piece (though I could not help commenting on it). As you will be hearing more on the subject, I shall restrain myself  from further  lamentations. I’m sure you know the feeling I’m talking about.skodelice-631.jpg

Hand painting

Although the crafting did not do as planned, it was nevertheless a creative weekend. Sometimes ideas take a long (in this case way too long) time to incubate. And sometimes, it seems it’s worth waiting, like with this photo taken on the outskirts of Budapest I dare not to say how many years ago.

OK, gulp, it was nine years ago. The negative was overdeveloped etc. but the hand paint job really becomes it. At least in my opinion. Can’t wait to frame it.

Sixty

Today’s number is sixty, found while browsing through my old photographs. This one was taken about five years ago in Venice. As for the personal detail, when I cook, I only stick to the recipe for the first time; second time around, I’m already creative.

P.S.The numbers in this category may look like a random lottery ticket – should anyone use the combination and win, he or she is kindly asked to make at least a symbolic donation :)

Magic moment

After a couple days of rain and a pinch of snow, we had a wonderful sunny day. In late afternoon, the sun rays crawled up to our shelf in the living room and lit the displayed objects in this fiery light. The magic was there for about a minute before it faded away but enough for me to capture it and share it with you.

A glimpse of oneself

Today on my way back from work, I had one of those “who I am ” flashes – I don’t mean the evaluative contemplation about one’s achievements but a brief glimpse of oneself, sort of like catching a glimpse of oneself in a rearview mirror and concluding, whether you like or dislike what you see.  I was driving from work, listening to Radio Student playing a hilarious song “waiting for me to come with hashish from Amsterdam”; there were bags of baby supplies in the backseat, a surprise for Dragana (very nice peace of fabric) and some freshly bought crafter’s supply for my postcards project for which I really don’t have the time to start. And I was quite satisfied with what I saw. Apart from my overgrown beard.

The photo is from evening pumpkin-gnocchi making (testing my new chef’s tool). These are just the ones that had (currently) escaped the pot.

Would anyone like a mansion?

Although looking for a piece of a real estate in central or costal regions of Slovenia can be the ultimate frustrating experience (prices gone wild and getting wilder), there are still incredible offers on the “periphery”. Like this decaying mansion (
340m2 + 1.200m2 land) built in 1683 for 32.000 €. Admittedly, it is in poor condition, but hey, you can become a proper lord of a manor. My only problem is that it is not in the region I’d like to move to and hence goodbye to my childhood dream. Come to think of it, we would have gotten another reason to call Tamara a princess.

Today’s number in 14, spotted on a caravan while taking Tamara for a walk in Kamnik. And to make Drowning by numbers more interesting, I decided to add a random piece of self-revealing info to each number. Like the fact that when making pancakes, I never get the first one right – it is either too thick or too greasy or both. But it nevertheless makes a good snack while making the rest.

Number of the day

Somedays, I just cannot help but noticing a certain number that “flashes” me as “The” number of the day. Like in Peter Greenaway’s film from which I borrow the name of this category, numbers are omnipresent and some just stick out. Like this one above. The number for January 19th is from downtown Ljubljana; the sign says “18 persons”.

Two Euros 20 Cents

Just a quick black-eye photosnap from my
way to one of Ljubljana’s libraries. Unfortunately, its one of those libraries that charges for overdue books and yet again, I had succumbed to my old habit of belatedness. At least in Euros showed their comforting side for once - the amount didn’t sound as shamefully (high) as in Tolars.

And since I also have a habit of glancing through doorways as I walk pass the open entrance doors you can count on seeing more of such tiled entrances.

The semester is over

Hurah! Yesterday was the last day of the fall semester, which means I am down to grading 150 papers and that’s it for the next four weeks. Lots of time to spend with my girls, cook the breastfeeding-friendly food (which can be frustrating due to all limitations), get some crafty ideas on paper and try to get pass the page two of the first chapter of my PhD. Well, we’ll see about the last one :)
